Hardwicke Estate granted as a gift of mercy and thanks to Ealfrid son of Britulfine after fleeing from Danish pirates. In 1180 AD. William De Turp gave the land to the Church of Durham. Later charter granted to prior & convent of Hesleden and this confirmed by King Henry II and Bull of Pope Cellestine. About 1307 A.D. the chapel of Hardwicke Hall was destroyed by Scott's raiders.
